Gerry Kelly

In this project, I was tasked in creating a brand-new logo for a television chat show and animate it to show a new guest each week.

Target Audience: 18+

Illustrator, After Effects

BRIEF

The task was to create a new logo for a TV show featuring Gerry Kelly as the host. I was asked to keep it modern and simple to appeal to a younger audience but keeping the original.

RESEARCH

To begin the project, I researched into Gerry Kelly himself and what other shows he has presented in the past to get a better understanding of him and his brand. I created a mind map and laid it out into sections such as shows, brand

colours, target audience etc, then tried to find similarities between them. Due to Gerry wanting a modern and new brand for his new tv chat show, I investigated various tv chat shows that has done well on UTV and BBC in the past and took inspiration from their logos.

PROCESS

As Gerry was wanting something simple and modern that appealed to a younger audience plus his own current audience, it was hard to find the fine line between the two. I sketched out multiple ideas using an exercise where it’s a quick fire 30 seconds to come up with a logo and when the 30 seconds are up, I reset the timer and repeated the exercise until I felt I had enough. The exercise allowed me to get any idea that came to my head and sketch it down quickly without thinking too much into it.

LOGO DESIGN + IDEATION

Once I had picked the sketches, I thought would work the best, I took to Illustrator and started work onto finding the right fonts. Keeping it modern and simple but still appealing to a large audience is hard, I was asking anyone who was around for their opinion, what I would change, would this appeal to them, is it easy to read etc I was mainly inspired by his other shows in the past as they have proved well with his older audience however to capture his younger audience, a cleaner, crisper typeface would be better to fit with the current times and style.

The colour palette I kept very minimal to three colours, black, white and orange. Due to it having to be kept on his original backdrop, I was limited to the colours I could use anyhow therefore having neutral colours would be safe and orange is a complimentary colour to blue which is the colour of the backdrop.

ANIMATION

When animating the logo, I ran into a lot of problems which I did require help from tutors during my last academic establishment, but they ended up going in a different direction with the animation.

REFLECTION

Looking back on the project now, I am happy with the final product and how it looked on television. The time frame I was given for this was 1 weeks therefore there was some constraints, and it was rushed slightly trying to get it done in time for them to begin filming.
